Built-In Unit: In Progress
This morning you got to see a 'sneak peek' of our built-in unit in the living room. I figured I'd go one step further and show you all of the shelves that we have "finished" for the time being. Truthfully, they will likely be a work-in-progress and continually be shifted around, changed out, and redecorated as the days, weeks, and months go by. Just keepin' it real.
Truthfully, there are still quite a few shelves in the built-in unit that are still empty or have temporary solutions that are not complete. So, an overall photo of the unit will have to wait. However, I'm excited with the progress that we've made so far and wanted to share it with you.
Honestly, it is a bit daunting to try and fill each of the shelves - making each shelf look good plus tie in to the shelves around it is a tall order! Especially because our shelves are pretty deep. It's a great bonus when you have large items you want to place on a shelf, but also a major obstacle to overcome when working with smaller objects. I started with the large openings that could accommodate taller items and worked from there.
Here, you can see the shelf pictured behind an Easter photo from this weekend. It is on the bottom left shelf in the unit. The shelf has a small IKEA lamp in front of a white IKEA pot holding some tulips. I love how the little light looks when turned on, and fresh flowers always make a space look more inviting (even though they don't tend to last very long).
Above that shelf is one that holds a simple bowl from IKEA - the silver finish and fun pattern of the bowl make it able to stand alone. I thought about adding a stand so that the bowl would be propped up, but for right now I like it as is. Plus, I'm not exactly sure where I'd find this mythical stand for a large bowl.
The next shelf up has some cute peanut photos in black picture frames and a scented candle that I won at a bridal or baby shower ages ago. I love incorporating personal photos into our home so we can look back on fun memories and remember happy times.
Two shelves above that one (at the top of the built-in) is currently home to a Pottery Barn lantern with a blue candle inside. The blue candle isn't what I would chose, but it was one we already had on hand. I haven't been able to make it to the store for a replacement yet.
To the right of that shelf is another shelf 'in progress'. This one holds three large glass jars (two from Pottery Barn and the smallest one from Martha Stewart [that sadly I don't think is available any longer]). The tallest container holds water and will eventually have a white floating candle inside. The wide container is currently empty but will soon be home to sand and a few sand dollars or starfish. The smallest canister holds large sized blue/green/white sea glass. A whole beach themed ensemble.
Again to the right (still above the TV opening), is home to a large scale black and white print from our wedding in a black frame and a pillar candle.
On the right side of the built-in unit there is only one shelf that I'm okay with for the time being. It holds a carving of a kissing couple from our honeymoon and a small white IKEA pot with fake flowers (because they don't die and we had some in storage). Definitely not one of my favorite shelves decor wise, but it works for now.
What do you think? Any ideas for the remaining shelves or things we could do to make the ones posted even better? I'd love to hear your thoughts!
